Carne Asada Fries

Load up your favorite fries with carne asada, homemade cheese sauce, and all the toppings!

I can tell you one thing about my family, if Hispanic cuisine is involved, we’re gonna be there. There is a local taco truck that is so delicious (not to mention so many authentic eateries) and one thing my oldest always goes for is the carne asada fries. When I make my monthly meal plan, everyone chimes in with what they are craving and he requested carne asada fries. This recipe has a homemade cheese sauce to go with it and overall is just too good for words. I had to load mine up with all the toppings and cannot wait to have it again!

What You Need:

For the Steak:

  • 1/4 cup lime juice

  • 1/4 cup orange juice (we subbed apple due to allergies)

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 4 tsp. minced garlic cloves

  • 1 tsp. salt

  • 1 tsp. ground black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp. cumin

  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano

  • 1 1/2 lb. skirt steak (or desired cut)

For the Fries & Cheese Sauce:

  • 1 bag frozen seasoned fries

  • 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter

  • 3 Tbsp. all purpose flour

  • 1 1/4 cups milk

  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt

  • 8 oz. sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded

For Serving:

  • Diced avocados

  • Pico de gallo

  • Sour cream

  • Cilantro

  • Sliced jalapeno

Directions:

  1. For the Steak: Combine all ingredients except meat in a zipper bag. Then add meat and marinate for 6 hours or overnight.

  2. Grill steak over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes on each side for medium rare doneness (unless you prefer it to be more done).

  3. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil. Set aside.

  4. For the Fries & Cheese Sauce: Bake fries according to package directions.

  5. Meanwhile, melt butter into a medium saucepan over medium heat.

  6. Add flour and whisk constantly for 2 minutes.

  7. Slowly add milk and garlic salt. Whisk constantly for 3 to 4 minutes until thickened.

  8. Add half of the cheese and whisk until melted and smooth. Repeat with remaining half of cheese.

  9. Remove from heat and cover until ready to serve. If needed, put over medium-low heat to warm back up.

  10. Slice the steak into strips or bite-size pieces.

  11. Serve fries topped with a drizzle of cheese sauce, steak, and additional cheese sauce.

  12. Add your desired toppings: avocado, pico de gallo, sour cream, cilantro, and jalapeno.
